Six Reasons You Need a
Certified Marriage Certificate Translation in NZ.

A marriage certificate translation isn't just for visa applications. Here are the six most common situations our clients come to us for โ€” and what each authority generally asks for.

๐Ÿ’‘

INZ Partner Visa Applications

Whether you're applying for a partner visa, resident visa, or your partner is sponsoring you for residency, INZ generally requires a certified translation of any marriage certificate not in English. Selective translation is usually accepted for partner and family visa categories โ€” covering names, marriage date and place, issuing authority, and registration details.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

NZ Citizenship โ€” DIA Applications

The Department of Internal Affairs generally requires a certified translation of foreign-language marriage certificates for citizenship applications, name changes through marriage, and passport renewals. DIA usually adds one requirement: the translation must be produced from your original document, not from a scan. We follow this and note it precisely in our Certificate of Accuracy.

๐Ÿ“

Name Change After Marriage

If you married overseas and want to change your name on your NZ driver licence, bank accounts, or other records, a certified translation of your overseas marriage certificate is typically required to show the name change is legally documented. We translate the relevant fields and note both the original and new name clearly in the translation.

โš–๏ธ

NZ Family Court Proceedings

Family Court matters involving overseas marriages โ€” including divorce, property, and parenting order proceedings โ€” generally require a full translation rather than a selective one, accompanied by a Translator's Affirmation sworn before a New Zealand Justice of the Peace. That is our Court Ready service.

โœˆ๏ธ

Overseas Use โ€” Notarisation & Apostille

Need your New Zealand marriage certificate recognised in Australia, India, the UK, the Philippines, the Algeria, or another country party to the Hague Convention? We translate NZ marriage certificates into 160+ languages, arrange notarisation by a NZ Notary Public, and coordinate the apostille through the Department of Internal Affairs.

๐Ÿฅ

Medical, Insurance & Legal Next of Kin

Hospitals, insurance providers, superannuation funds, and wills and estates processes often require certified translations of overseas marriage certificates to confirm spousal relationships โ€” for next-of-kin records, insurance beneficiary changes, and estate distribution. We produce certified translations for these purposes.

Recognised Everywhere That Matters

Prepared for INZ, DIA, NZQA
and NZ Courts โ€” in the Format Each One Asks For.

Each authority asks for something different โ€” INZ generally accepts selective translations, DIA usually needs the original document for citizenship, and NZ Courts generally want a full translation with a Translator's Affirmation before a JP. We confirm which format applies before we start, so the document is right the first time.

What Every Translation Includes

What's Inside Every Certified
Marriage Certificate Translation We Deliver.

A certified marriage certificate translation is not just a translated page โ€” it's a specific package of documents that INZ case officers are trained to review. Get one component wrong and your application comes back. Here is what we include on every order, without being asked.

๐Ÿ“‹

Certificate of Accuracy

A signed, dated declaration from your NZSTI-aligned translator confirming the translation is complete and accurate. INZ, DIA, and NZ Courts generally require this โ€” a missing or incomplete one is among the most common reasons a document is queried, however good the translation itself is.

๐Ÿ‘ค

Translator's Full Credentials

Your translator's full name, NZSTI-aligned qualifications, and direct contact details appear on every translation. INZ checks translator credentials and will query a Certificate of Accuracy that lists only a company name without individual translator details.

๐Ÿ“Ž

Certified Copy of Your Document

A certified copy of your original marriage certificate scan is attached to the translation, confirming the translation corresponds to an actual document. For DIA citizenship applications, we note that the translation was produced from your original.

๐Ÿ”„

Correct Format for Your Authority

INZ and DIA generally accept selective translations. NZ Courts usually require a full translation. We determine the correct format for your specific authority and application type before starting โ€” not afterwards, when it's too late to change without starting over.

๐Ÿ”ค

Both Spouses' Names Checked

Marriage certificates carry both spouses' names, not just your own. We check the romanisation of both against passport spellings and flag any discrepancies with a translator's note โ€” preventing the name-mismatch queries that delay partner visa applications.

๐Ÿ“…

Non-Gregorian Date Conversion

Marriage certificates from many countries record dates in Hijri, Buddhist Era, Bikram Sambat, or other non-Gregorian calendar systems. We convert to Gregorian and note both dates โ€” which matters when INZ matches your marriage date against other application documents.

Simple 4-Step Process

Marriage Certificate Translation for INZ, DIA & NZ Courts โ€” Full Guide

A marriage certificate is one of the most translated documents in NZ visa and citizenship applications โ€” and one of the most commonly returned. Not because the translation was wrong. Because the Certificate of Accuracy was missing, the translator's credentials weren't on it, or the format didn't match the authority it went to. Here is what you need to know before you submit.

๐ŸขWhat INZ Asks For in a Marriage Certificate Translation

Immigration New Zealand generally requires certified English translations of foreign-language marriage certificates. This applies to partner visa applications, family visa applications, skilled migrant residency applications, and any application where you're submitting a foreign-language marriage certificate as supporting evidence.

The translation must be produced by a qualified, independent translator โ€” not by the applicant, a family member, or an immigration adviser. It must include a signed Certificate of Accuracy, the translator's name and credentials, and a certified copy of the original document. Requirements can change โ€” confirm the current ones with Immigration New Zealand before you apply. Last checked: 14 September 2026.

๐Ÿ’ก For most INZ visa categories, a selective translation is generally accepted โ€” covering both spouses' full names, date and place of marriage, officiant, witness names, registration number, and issuing authority. We confirm the correct format for your specific visa category before starting.

๐Ÿ“„Certified Copy or Original โ€” Which One Gets Translated?

This catches people out more than anything else on this page. If the receiving agency has asked for a certified copy rather than the original, get the copy certified first by a Justice of the Peace or a lawyer, and then send that certified copy for translation. The translation has to match the document the agency actually asked for. Translating the original instead is a common reason a submission is sent back. If you are not sure which your agency wants, ask them before you order โ€” and send us the answer with your document.

๐Ÿ“œMarriage Contracts vs Marriage Certificates

Many countries โ€” particularly in the Middle East (Egypt, Lebanon, UAE, Jordan), South Asia, and parts of Africa โ€” issue marriage contracts rather than a standard civil registration certificate. A marriage contract is typically several pages long, contains financial and legal terms, and is structured very differently from the single-page certificates most NZ authorities are used to seeing.

INZ and DIA generally accept selective translations of marriage contracts. We translate the key fields they need without requiring a full translation of every legal clause โ€” keeping cost down and turnaround fast. A full translation is available for Family Court proceedings where the contract's legal terms are in dispute.

๐ŸคCivil Union Certificates โ€” Same Process, Same Outcome

If you entered a civil union overseas and need the certificate translated for an INZ partner visa, DIA citizenship, or Family Court proceeding, the process is identical to a marriage certificate translation. We translate civil union certificates from every country that legally recognises civil unions โ€” including the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and others. INZ and DIA treat the certified translation in exactly the same way.

๐Ÿ›๏ธDIA Citizenship โ€” The Original Document Rule

For NZ citizenship applications, the Department of Internal Affairs generally requires the certified translation to be produced from your original marriage certificate โ€” not from a scan. Many people discover this only after DIA returns a query asking for the translation to be redone from the original.

โš ๏ธ Our Certificate of Accuracy for DIA submissions states that the translation was produced from the original document. If your original is overseas, contact us before sending anything and we'll advise on the secure process. Confirm the current requirement with DIA before ordering.

โš–๏ธCourt Ready vs Notarised โ€” Which One You Actually Need

These two get confused constantly, and they are not interchangeable. A Justice of the Peace witnesses documents used inside New Zealand โ€” a Translator's Affirmation sworn before a JP is what NZ courts and tribunals generally ask for. A Notary Public is a senior lawyer whose signature is recognised overseas, and DIA will only authenticate a notary's signature when issuing an apostille. A JP cannot stand in for a notary on an overseas document, and a notary is not usually needed for a NZ court filing.

New Zealand also does not run a sworn-translator system the way Spain, France or Germany do โ€” no NZ authority appoints or swears in translators. If you have been asked for a "sworn translation", what is almost always meant is a certified translation with one of the two layers above on top.

๐ŸŒMarriage Certificate Formats by Country of Origin

The format of a marriage certificate varies dramatically by country. Our translators are matched by country, not just language โ€” so your document goes to someone who has translated hundreds of certificates from that specific civil registry system.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท
Korea

Family relationship certificates (๊ฐ€์กฑ๊ด€๊ณ„์ฆ๋ช…์„œ) and dedicated marriage certificates from Korean civil registries. Both formats handled.

๐ŸŒ
Samoa, Tonga & Fiji

Pacific Island certificates including church-registered marriages that serve as official civil records. We know which issuing authority formats NZ authorities recognise.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ
South Asia โ€” Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka

Nikah documents, marriage deeds, and civil certificates in Urdu, Bengali, and Sinhala script. Islamic calendar dates converted with Gregorian equivalents noted.

โฑ๏ธHow Long Does Marriage Certificate Translation Take?

Most marriage certificates are one to two pages. Multi-page marriage contracts take longer. Turnaround is charged on top of whichever tier you choose, so a court-ready or notarised translation can still be rushed.

The NZ Translations Difference

Why Immigration Advisers
Refer Their Partner Visa Clients to Us.

When a partner visa or residency application is delayed because of a translation problem, it costs weeks and the full cost of a new translation. Licensed immigration advisers refer us because they know what they are getting before we even start.

๐Ÿ…

NZSTI-Aligned Translators Only

Every translator on our network holds NZSTI-aligned credentials. We credential-check before assigning any document. Your marriage certificate is never handled by a freelancer who self-certified their own competence or a generic linguist with no civil registry expertise.

๐Ÿ”

Free Revision If an Authority Queries

If INZ, DIA, NZQA or a court comes back with a query on one of our translations, we revise and reissue it at no extra cost. Acceptance is always the agency's decision โ€” but a query never costs you.

โšก

Express From 12 Hours, 7 Days

Partner visa appointment dates don't move. Our express service delivers certified marriage certificate translations within 12โ€“24 hours โ€” including weekends and most NZ public holidays. Email us at 9pm on Sunday and we respond.

๐ŸŒ

Country-Specific Registry Knowledge

PSA marriage certificates from the Philippines have annotation sections that generic translators ignore. Saudi marriage contracts have specific field structures that determine how INZ reads the document. We know the difference โ€” because our translators have translated thousands of certificates from each country.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Fixed Quote in 30 Minutes

Send your certificate via form or email. Within 30 minutes you have a confirmed fixed price, the correct translation type for your authority, and an exact delivery date โ€” 7 days a week, including evenings.

๐Ÿ”’

Both Spouses Protected

A marriage certificate contains personal information about two people, not one. We handle both spouses' data under NZSTI confidentiality protocols. Documents are deleted after delivery. NDAs are available for immigration firms and corporate clients.

Questions We Answer Every Day

Marriage Certificate Translation NZ โ€”
Every Question, Answered.

Will Immigration NZ accept your marriage certificate translations?

โ–พ
We format every translation to the standard Immigration New Zealand sets out: a complete and accurate translation, a signed Certificate of Accuracy, and the translator's name and credentials โ€” prepared by someone who is not you, your family, or your adviser. Acceptance is always the agency's decision, so we can't promise an outcome. What we can promise is that if INZ comes back with a query on our work, we revise and reissue it at no extra cost. Confirm current requirements with Immigration New Zealand before you apply.

The agency asked for a certified copy โ€” do I send the original for translation?

โ–พ
No โ€” and this catches a lot of people out. If the receiving agency has asked for a certified copy rather than the original, get the copy certified first by a Justice of the Peace or a lawyer, and then send that certified copy for translation. The translation has to match the document the agency actually asked for. Translating the original instead is a common reason a submission gets sent back. If you are not sure which one your agency wants, ask them before you order โ€” and send us the answer with your document.

Do I need a selective or full translation of my marriage certificate?

โ–พ
For most INZ visa applications (partner, family, skilled migrant, resident) and DIA applications, a selective translation is generally accepted โ€” covering both spouses' names, the marriage date and place, the officiant, witness names where relevant, registration number, and issuing authority. A full translation is usually required for NZ Court submissions. We confirm which format applies to your situation before starting.

Do you need my original marriage certificate?

โ–พ
For most INZ visa applications, a clear scan or high-quality photograph is sufficient. We produce the certified translation from your scan and attach a certified copy of the document image. Exception: for DIA citizenship applications, DIA generally requires the translation to be produced from your original document, not from a scan. If this applies to you, contact us by email and we'll advise on the secure process for sharing your original.

What is the difference between Court Ready and Notarised?

โ–พ
Court Ready carries a Translator's Affirmation sworn before a New Zealand Justice of the Peace, which is what NZ courts and tribunals generally ask for. Notarised is signed and sealed by a New Zealand Notary Public, which is what you need when the document is going overseas โ€” DIA will only authenticate a notary's signature when issuing an apostille. A JP is not a Notary Public and the two cannot be substituted for one another. New Zealand does not have a sworn-translator system, so a request for a "sworn translation" usually means one of these two.

Can you translate a marriage contract (nikah, mehr, etc.)?

โ–พ
Yes. Many countries โ€” particularly in the Middle East and South Asia โ€” issue marriage contracts (nikah documents, mehr agreements, marriage deeds) that are several pages long and structured very differently from a civil registration certificate. INZ and DIA generally accept selective translations of marriage contracts. We translate the key fields they need without translating every legal clause, which keeps the cost close to a standard marriage certificate translation. Contact us with your specific document for a free quote.

Can you translate a civil union certificate?

โ–พ
Yes. Civil union certificates are translated using the same process and to the same standard as marriage certificates. INZ and DIA treat certified translations of civil union certificates the same way for partner visa and citizenship applications. The process, turnaround time, and pricing are identical.

How much does marriage certificate translation cost in New Zealand?

โ–พ
A certified marriage certificate translation for INZ, DIA, NZQA or NZTA starts at $49 per document, GST inclusive, including the Certificate of Accuracy. Court Ready โ€” with a Translator's Affirmation sworn before a NZ JP โ€” is $99. Notarised, for use overseas, is $149, with an apostille a further $50. Turnaround is separate: standard is included, Express 24-hour adds $20, and Urgent 12-hour adds $50. Multi-page marriage contracts are quoted individually. These are starting prices โ€” send us your document and we reply with a written fixed quote within 30 minutes.

How fast can you translate my marriage certificate?

โ–พ
Most single-page marriage certificates are completed in 1โ€“2 working days even on standard turnaround. Express within 24 hours and Urgent within 12 hours are available 7 days a week including weekends. If you have a specific INZ appointment date or DIA submission deadline, tell us when you contact us and we build the delivery timeline around it. We work weekends and most NZ public holidays.

Can you translate my NZ marriage certificate for use overseas?

โ–พ
Yes. We translate New Zealand marriage certificates from English into 160+ languages. For countries party to the Hague Convention, we arrange notarisation and then an apostille through NZ's Department of Internal Affairs, making your certificate recognised internationally. The Convention list keeps growing โ€” China joined in November 2023 and the Algeria more recently โ€” so check your destination's current status with DIA first. For countries outside the Convention we manage consular legalisation through the relevant embassy in NZ.
