What Makes a German to English Translation Acceptable in New Zealand?
New Zealand authorities do not ask for a sworn German translator. What they look for is a complete English translation, certified as correct by the translator, with the original document attached. Immigration New Zealand's translation guidance also says it will not accept translations by the applicant, a family member or the adviser on the application, and asks that names follow the English spelling in your passport. German documents raise a few extra points, which this guide covers.
Which German Documents We Translate Most
German requests to NZ Translations fall into three groups:
- Civil records: Geburtsurkunde and Auszug aus dem Geburtenregister, Eheurkunde, Scheidungsurteil and Sterbeurkunde, for visas, partnership applications and NZ citizenship.
- Education records: Abiturzeugnis, Bachelor and Master Zeugnisse, Diploma Supplements and state recognition certificates, for NZQA, universities and registration bodies.
- Work and personal papers: Arbeitszeugnis (employer reference), Fรผhrungszeugnis (police certificate), Meldebescheinigung and bank documents.
From Our Recent German Files
A few things have come up repeatedly in German enquiries sent to us this year:
- Birth certificates from the former GDR. A client applying for New Zealand citizenship sent a birth certificate issued in East Germany. GDR forms use different headings and registry office names from current German records. We translate the place names as printed and add a short note with the present-day name, so the record still reads clearly against a modern passport.
- Early childhood teaching records for NZQA. One client sent a German state recognition certificate for early childhood education together with a degree certificate and an employer reference. The state recognition title has no exact New Zealand equivalent, so we translate the title literally and keep the German term in brackets. Deciding what it equals in New Zealand is a matter for NZQA, not for the translator.
- Arbeitszeugnis wording. German employer references use a coded style in which polite phrases carry graded meaning. We translate the words accurately and do not rewrite them as stronger or weaker praise.
Austrian and Swiss Documents
Austrian records use their own terms, such as Staatsbรผrgerschaftsnachweis and Meldezettel, and Swiss civil records are issued by cantonal offices, often with a French or Italian section on the same page. We translate every German-language part, and if another language appears on the same document we tell you before quoting so nothing is missed.
Multilingual Extracts and When You Still Need a Translation
Some German registry offices issue multilingual international extracts with field labels in several languages, including English. Whether a receiving body accepts these without a separate translation depends on that body and on how much handwritten or free-text content the extract contains. If you are unsure, send us the document and the name of the authority, and we will tell you what the English version would cover before you pay.
How Much Does German to English Translation Cost in New Zealand?
Certified German to English translation starts from $49 per document, GST inclusive, for standard civil records. Academic transcripts start from $99 because of their length and grading detail. Court-ready and notarised options are available, and you always receive a fixed written quote before work begins.
