Your Auckland Translator

Do You Need a Certified Translator in Auckland,
or Can It Be Done Online?

Online is how it works now. Immigration New Zealand no longer runs a public counter in Auckland, so visa documents go in online — and your certified translation can too. Our certified translation services in Auckland run fully online, which means no queue, no parking and no trip into town.

🚪

INZ counters have closed

The Auckland Central counter shut in 2018, and there is no public counter at Manukau either. Applications are made online, and paper documents are posted or couriered. A PDF translation fits that system perfectly.

📱

A photo is enough to start

Snap your document on your phone and send it by WhatsApp or email. A translator in Auckland reads it, tells you what the receiving office needs, and sends a written quote. You deal with the same small team from first message to finished file.

📍

Local when it matters

Some steps still need a person in the room. When a translation must be sworn before a Justice of the Peace or sealed by a Notary Public, that happens here in Auckland.

Applying for a visa from Auckland? Most residence files need several documents translated, with names spelled the same way on every one. Our immigration document translation page explains what a full INZ file usually includes. For INZ’s own details, see its contact page.

Auckland’s Languages

Which Languages Are Spoken
Most in Auckland?

After English, the 2023 Census found Mandarin, Samoan and Hindi were spoken most across the Auckland region. Our translators cover all of them, and every other language you are likely to meet in the city.

Language Speakers in the Auckland region
Mandarin78,231
Samoan75,066
Hindi49,644
Cantonese38,136
Tongan29,460
Punjabi27,306
Tagalog27,219

Source: Stats NZ, 2023 Census, Our region: Auckland and Figure.NZ. People could give more than one language.

🇨🇳

Two Chinese languages

Mandarin and Cantonese together make Chinese Auckland’s largest language group after English. They are written in different styles, so we check which one your document uses before we quote.

🏝

A Pacific city

Samoan is spoken by more Aucklanders than any language except English and Mandarin, and Tongan is close behind Punjabi and Tagalog. Family papers from the islands often mix Samoan or Tongan with English, and we translate only the parts that need it.

🇮🇳

Growing Indian and Filipino communities

Hindi, Punjabi and Tagalog speakers together number more than 100,000 across the region. Birth, marriage and police records from India and the Philippines come with their own layouts, and our translators know them well.

Documents in Chinese? Simplified and traditional characters, and names written three different ways, are covered in detail on our Chinese translation page.

Where It Is Going

Which Auckland Offices Ask for
a Certified Translation?

Nearly every official office you deal with in Auckland will want one for a document that is not in English. The table shows the main ones, how you reach them, and what they usually receive from you.

Office In Auckland What you give them
Immigration New ZealandNo public counter; online and by postAn uploaded certified translation
Births, Deaths and Marriages (DIA)Office in Manukau; mostly online or by appointmentA certified translation with your application
NZTA licensing agentsSelected AA and VTNZ sitesA printed translation, in person
Auckland courtsAlbert Street and five other District CourtsOften a translation affirmed before a JP
University of Auckland and AUTOnline admission portalsTranslated transcripts and certificates

Some offices call it an “official translation”. In New Zealand, that means a certified translation signed by the translator.

Each office sets its own rules and can change them. Last checked: 22 September 2026. On a phone, move the table sideways.

One Auckland tip that saves a trip. The University of Auckland asks for school transcripts to be translated too, not only degrees. If you are applying there, send us everything in one go. For registering a birth or ordering a New Zealand certificate, DIA lists its Manukau office here. Overseas birth records for Auckland families are covered on our birth certificate translation page.

Tell Me What My Office Needs →

Name the office and send a photo. We’ll check it against their rules first.

Driving in Auckland

What Should You Take to an Auckland
AA or VTNZ Licence Counter?

Your original overseas licence, your passport, a printed translation and good colour photocopies of all of them. NZTA’s conversion form, the DL5, asks for an original written translation, so a photo on your phone will not do at the counter.

Only some branches do conversions

Overseas licence conversions are handled at specialist sites, which are selected AA and VTNZ branches, not every branch. Check the AA or NZTA website for the one nearest you and book ahead, because Auckland sites are busy.

Who can translate your licence

NZTA accepts a translation from an NZTA-approved translator, from your country’s embassy or consulate, or from the office that issued the licence. Your translation from us is done by an NZTA-approved translator and signed for accuracy.

Ask for a printed copy

Tell us your appointment date when you order and ask for a printed copy. Then photocopy the translation in colour along with your licence and passport, because the counter wants copies of everything you hand over.

The time limit for driving on an overseas licence, and which countries skip the tests, are explained on our driver licence translation page.

Conversion sites and requirements are set by NZTA and its agents. See the AA’s conversion page for current details. Last checked: 22 September 2026.

Auckland Courts

Which Translation Does
an Auckland Court Need?

Usually a Court Ready translation, where the translator affirms it before a Justice of the Peace. That is the extra step courts often ask for, and it is done in Auckland so it does not slow your case down.

Auckland District Court

At 65–69 Albert Street in the city. It hears Family Court and Youth Court matters, runs Rangatahi and Pasifika Courts, and houses the Disputes and Tenancy Tribunals.

Across the region

There are also District Courts at North Shore, Waitākere, Manukau, Papakura and Pukekohe. The Auckland High Court sits on Waterloo Quadrant, and employment matters go through the specialist courts centre.

Tell us the court and date

Family and immigration hearings run to fixed dates. Give us the hearing date with your documents, and we plan the translation and the JP step backwards from it. The translator who affirms the translation is the one who did the work.

Working on a case? Affidavits, court orders and overseas judgments are handled by our legal translators. Our legal translation page covers them, and the Ministry of Justice lists every court with its hours.

Going Overseas

Can You Get an Apostille
in Auckland?

Not in person. New Zealand’s apostilles are issued only by the Department of Internal Affairs in Wellington. The notary step happens here in Auckland, and the document then goes to Wellington by courier or as an e-apostille.

1

Translate

We translate and certify your document here.

2

Notarise in Auckland

A Notary Public in Auckland signs and seals it.

3

DIA in Wellington

DIA checks the notary’s signature and adds the apostille.

4

Back to you

The finished document returns, ready for use abroad.

Dealing with the Consulate General of India in Auckland? Its own guidance says affidavits and powers of attorney must be notarised by a Notary Public, not attested by a JP. They are then authenticated by DIA. Documents issued in New Zealand also need a DIA apostille before the consulate attests them. If the steps are done in the wrong order, the papers can be sent back.

Read the consulate’s own page for its current list. The full chain, fees and timings are on our apostille services page.

Plan My Overseas Papers →

Tell us the country. We’ll set out every step before you pay.

Check your destination with DIA’s official guide before you order. Last checked: 22 September 2026.

Free Help

Where Can You Find
a Free JP in Auckland?

At your local library. Most Auckland Council libraries have a Justice of the Peace service desk, and JPs are volunteers, so there is no charge. Central City, Mt Roskill, Ōtāhuhu, Manurewa, Takapuna and New Lynn are among them.

📄

Certified copies

If an office asks for a certified copy rather than your original, a JP certifies the copy first. Then send that certified copy to us, so the translation matches what the office asked for.

✍

A JP is not a translator

A JP can witness a signature or certify a copy, but cannot vouch that a translation is accurate. That is the translator’s job, done through a signed Certificate of Accuracy.

📝

Take the right things

Bring photo ID, your original and a photocopy. Do not sign anything before you arrive, because the JP needs to watch you sign.

Find a desk near you on Auckland Libraries’ JP page. Hours vary by library.

In a Hurry

Can You Get a Same-Day
Certified Translation in Auckland?

Yes. Choose Urgent and your certified translation comes back within 12 hours, or Express for within 24. That covers the night before an AA appointment, a visa deadline or a hearing that moved.

What makes it fast

Send a clear photo straight away, tell us the deadline, and say who the translation is for. The quote comes back within half an hour. Once you approve it, work starts at once. Racing a visa deadline? Our visa document translation page lists what each visa usually asks for.

What can slow it down

Handwritten records, faded stamps and long documents take longer to read carefully. We will tell you up front if a deadline is tight, rather than promise a time we cannot keep.

Fast, but checked

Urgent does not mean skipping steps. Names are still matched to your passport, and every translation still carries a signed Certificate of Accuracy.

Still Wondering

What Else Do Aucklanders Ask About
Certified Translation?

Is there a certified translator near me in Auckland?

▾
Yes, wherever you are in the region, from the North Shore to Manukau. Your certified translator in Auckland works fully online, so you rarely need to travel. Send a photo, get a quote within 30 minutes, and receive your translation by email.

Do you have an office I can visit?

▾
No. Our whole service runs online, the same way INZ and DIA now do. Where a step truly needs someone in person, such as a notary seal, we arrange it in Auckland and tell you exactly what is required.

Are you open on weekends?

▾
Yes, we are open seven days. Send your document on a Saturday or Sunday and we will still reply with a quote, which helps when a Monday appointment is coming up.

Who translates Samoan and Tongan documents in Auckland?

▾
We do. Samoan and Tongan are two of the most spoken languages in the city. Our translators know the certificates, church records and naming customs that come with them. Much of a Samoan or Tongan certificate is already in English, so we check first what actually needs translating.

Is the price different for Auckland?

▾
No. Certified translation starts from $49 whether you live in Albany or Invercargill. Your written quote shows the exact figure for your document before any work begins.

Do I need to send my original documents?

▾
Usually not. A clear scan or phone photo of every page is enough for us to quote and translate. If a notary is involved, we tell you in advance what else is needed. Your originals stay with you unless there is a real reason.
