What Makes a Polish to English Translation Acceptable in New Zealand?
New Zealand does not appoint sworn translators, so a tłumacz przysięgły stamp is not what most New Zealand bodies look for. Immigration New Zealand asks for a translation certified as correct by the translator, signed or stamped, submitted with the original, and not prepared by you, a family member or your adviser. For a New Zealand passport, DIA's guidance asks for translations to be sent with the original documents. The sections below cover the Polish documents we see most and the points that cause problems.
Polish Documents We Translate Most
- Civil records: akt urodzenia (birth certificate), akt małżeństwa (marriage certificate), akt zgonu, and divorce judgments, issued by the Urząd Stanu Cywilnego.
- Education records: świadectwo dojrzałości (matura certificate), dyplom ukończenia studiów and the diploma supplement.
- Legal and police papers: zaświadczenie o niekaralności from the National Criminal Register, court decisions and powers of attorney.
- Everyday documents: prawo jazdy (driving licence), employment certificates and bank documents.
From Our Recent Polish Files
Every Polish enquiry sent to us this year has been for the same purpose: a birth certificate for a New Zealand citizenship application. A few things came up:
- Quotes from a sample. One client sent a blank sample of the same certificate type to get a price before sending their own. That works for a quote, but the certified translation must be made from your own document.
- The same request sent twice. If you have not heard back, it is fine to send again. We check for repeats so you are only quoted once.
- Full or short copy. Polish offices issue a full copy and a short copy of the same record. If you are not sure which the receiving body wants, ask them before you order, and send us their answer.
Multilingual Extracts From Poland
Polish registry offices can also issue a multilingual extract (odpis wielojęzyczny) with field labels in several languages, including English. If a New Zealand body accepts it without a translation depends on that body and on how much free-text content the extract contains, such as annotations. If you are unsure, send us the document and the name of the authority, and we will tell you what the English version would cover before you pay.
How Much Does Polish to English Translation Cost in New Zealand?
Certified Polish to English translation starts from $49 per document, GST inclusive. Academic transcripts start from $99 because of their length. Court-ready and notarised options are available, and you always receive a fixed written quote before work begins.
